Gilbert and Sullivan for a New Generation

The Connecticut Gilbert and Sullivan Society is staging a production of Princess Ida, with the youngest cast since the group’s inception, giving Princess Ida new freshness and sparkle.

Much credit for this phenomenon goes to 15 year-old Claire McCarthy. This is her fourth production with the group. McCarthy portrays Melissa, a student at Princess Ida’s university, for the Saturday matinee. McCarthy joined the cast four years ago with The Gondoliers.

She recruited Henry Cox, 17, who portrays Cyril, and his sister Beatrice Cox, 14, last year. This year she recruited Andrew Lemire, and his sister Emma Lemire, and Richard Brown.

“I looked around at school and at church, too. As far as I can tell they’re all enjoying it,” McCarthy says.

Victoria Kelpen, 15, also is a veteran. She joined her first show, The Mikado with her family in 2010. This year she is Chloe in the Saturday matinee.

Princess Ida will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center, Valley Regional High School, 256 Kelsey Hill Road, Deep River.
