A Recipe for Kindness Rocks

Wondering how to get started making some of those kindness rocks? Here are some tips gleaned from experts in the art and craft of making them. Those who have been doing it for a long time say the key to getting started is to just do it. Don’t over think it or worry too much about whether it’s perfect, because no matter what it looks like, whoever finds it will probably think it’s just perfect.

Ingredients:

• Rocks

• Non-toxic acrylic paint or spray paint from the local hardware store or craft store

• Sharpie oil-based pain pens, Prismacolor permanent calligraphy pens, or Posca paint pens with fine tips

• Non-toxic sealant like Modge Podge, or clear acrylic spray like Krylon

• Your favorite affirmations

• Words of love and joy

• Peaceful thoughts

• Doodles

• And any other creative artwork or ideas you want to share with others

1. Collect some rocks. You can gather them in your neighborhood, during a walks in the woods, or a stroll on the beach. The woodlands and beaches in Connecticut often have coarse, angular rocks, which some people prefer for their distinctly rough and ready Connecticut-Long Island Sound vibe. These are often ideal for affirmations. Other people—particularly those who like a smooth, flat surface upon which to create artwork—prefer to walk into a store like Michaels or Home Depot and buy a bag of rocks.

2. Paint your rocks with the paint or spray paint. Let it dry.

3. Paint your affirmations, words of love and joy, peaceful thought, doodles, and other artwork or creative ideas on the rocks with your paint pens.

4. If you are in a group and want the finder to post your rock to the group, write that on the back.

5. Make sure everything is completely dry!

6. When everything is completely dry, seal it up with your sealant.

7. Go for another walk and hide them in places where people will find them. Local parks, town greens, hiking trails, school playgrounds, in the bushes near your local coffee shop, near your neighbors’ mailbox are just a few ideas.
