You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me by Sherman Alexie

Sherman Alexie’s mother crafted and sold quilts, which was often the family’s sole means of support on the Spokane reservation where he grew up in the ’70s. She is extraordinary in the eyes of her son for her complex personality and history. He pieces and arranges poetry and prose to present a story which is part homage and part diatribe. This reads like a eulogy for both her and for a native culture and landscape, creating a memoir that is deeply moving and haunting, a work of art.
