New Haven’s Monk 100 Committee, comprised of members of jazz great Thelonius Monk’s family and community members, committed to preserving Monk’s legacy through jazz and STEM education, is sponsoring United in His Presence, an evening of gospel, jazz, and inspirational music on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Woolsey Hall, Yale University, 500 College Street, New Haven. The concert will benefit the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief, the Bethel AME Zion food pantry, and the Monk 100 jazz education weekend in the spring.

The event will be hosted by legendary drummer and composer Thelonious Monk III and will feature an 100-voice, multi-generational, multi-ethnic, interfaith gospel choir and New Haven’s premier gospel jazz band Psalm 150.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, plus a non-perishable food item(s).

This concert is precursor to an 100th in memoriam birthday celebration for Thelonious Monk featuring an All-Star jazz band concert and jazz education weekend to be held in the spring. At that time Thelonious Monk III will be joined by internationally acclaimed jazz artists for a performance at Yale. Participating artists will visit area classrooms, hold workshops and assembly programs, and afford selected students the opportunity to perform with them on stage.
