09/28/2017 12:01 AMPhew! It is almost Columbus Day weekend and that means we locals can pretty much count on the fact that I-95 is almost tourist-free. Of course, that doesn’t count the closed lanes and insane traffic, but I remain hopeful.
I had an appointment in Old Saybrook early one Monday morning. On my way home, I decided I needed lunch. I stopped at the Rustic Café to see if its hamburgers are as good as they used to be. I had a big burger, with cheese, medium-rare as I requested, in a hard roll (in Massachusetts they are called “bulkies”). Had I remembered, I would have asked for grilled onions, too. Over the years of more than two owners, the food is good, the service excellent, and the prices still very reasonable.
