Les Mis, Fireflies, Being Earnest, The Male Intellect, and More


Returning to Hartford: The ever-popular Les Misérables is returning to the Bushnell in Hartford, Tuesday, Oct. 3 to Sunday, Oct. 8. This national tour is based on the new production originally staged in 2009 (the 25th anniversary of the show) and then was on Broadway for more than 1,000 performances in 2014-’15. All Star Cast: Fireflies, the world premiere that opens at Long Wharf on Wednesday, Oct. 11, features an all-star cast. The lead character will be played by Jane Alexander with Denis Arndt (a Tony nominee last June), Judith Ivy, and Christopher Michael McFarland. Playwright Matthew Barber (Tony nominated for Enchanted April) tells the story of a retired schoolteacher in a small Texas town who late one night encounters a mysterious drifter. Classic Comedy: The Connecticut Repertory Theatre on the UConn campus in Storrs is opening its season with Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest from Thursday, Oct. 5 to Sunday, Oct. 15. Liz McCartney and Stephon Pettway join the cast of theater majors in this play about what happens when a young man pretends to be someone he is not, all for the sake of love. Men: A one-man show by Robert Dubac, The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron? opens the Seven Angels Theatre season. In the show we meet Bobby (Dubac), a man just dumped by his girlfriend. The Immigrant Experience: Rags, a musical about the immigrant experience in New York City in the early 20th century, takes the stage of Goodspeed Musicals through Sunday, Dec. 10. While the show originated years ago, it has been completely revised/rewritten by the original composer (Charles Strouse, Annie) and lyricist (Stephen Schwartz, Wicked) with new book writer David Thompson. Yale Drama School: The first play in the Drama School’s 2017-’18 season is Pentecost by David Edgar, which runs Tuesday, Oct. 3 to Saturday, Oct. 7. These shows are fully produced by third year students at the Drama School. Pentecost, which had its American premiere at the Yale Rep in the mid-1990s, is about the discovery of a controversial art work that could divide religions. A Modern Age Romance: Next at Westport Country Playhouse is Sex with Strangers, billed as a digital-age romantic drama, running through Saturday, Oct. 14. It’s written by Laura Eason, who wrote the first four seasons of House of Cards. The play tells the story of two authors who are very different—a woman struggling to write her first novel and a younger male author whose book about casual sex has sold millions. Protecting Public Health: Artistic Director James Bundy is directing the Yale Rep’s opening production, An Enemy of the People by Henrik Ibsen from Friday, Oct. 6 through Saturday, Oct. 28. Pulitzer Prize Finalist: The Wolves, which was a finalist for the award last years and also received best play awards, is at TheaterWorks from Thursday, Oct. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 6.
