New to Netflix is a film adaptation of author/human rights activist Luong Ung’s memoir First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers. In this painful and memorable memoir, Ung details her life as a small child living in Cambodia during the rule of the corrupt Khmer Rouge after the conclusion of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

Co-written, directed, and produced by Angelina Jolie, First They Killed My Father is a powerful real-life story that Ung lived in the 1970s. As a little girl, Ung’s family was forced to vacate its home in Phnom Penh, give up all of its worldly possessions, and work endlessly as they nearly starved in labor camps. Eventually Ung was separated from her family and trained as a child soldier. The agony that Ung endured is apparent in every scene.

At more than two hours long, First They Killed My Father is often slow-moving and repetitive, but the heart-wrenching story of what Cambodians, and particularly Ung, endured remains a powerful one, particularly with the young actress Sareum Srey Moch starring as the young Luong Ung.

Coming Up Soon

Two new highly anticipated Netflix Original films are set to begin streaming on Friday, Sept. 29. Gerald’s Game is a psychological thriller based on a Stephen King novel of the same name starring Carla Gugino (Spy Kids and San Andreas) and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek and I, Robot). Left handcuffed to a bed in a lake house miles away from any other residence, Jessie is forced to confront “warped visions, dark secrets, and a dire choice.” In the romantic drama Our Souls at Night, Robert Redford (All is Lost and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Jane Fonda (Monster-In-Law and TV’s Grace and Frankie) star as two widowed neighbors who begin an unexpected relationship.

Netflix is also streaming new episodes of the popular drama Narcos this month, along with new episodes of the third season of Fuller House. In addition, several new comedy specials are hitting Netflix soon, including Jerry Before Seinfeld starring, of course, funny man Jerry Seinfeld. Look for upcoming comedy specials from Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Ellen Degeneres, too.

Just this month, Hulu began streaming the sixth and last season of Mindy Kaling’s (A Wrinkle in Time and TV’s The Office) hit show The Mindy Project and the second season of The Good Place starring Kristen Bell (Bad Moms and Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Ted Danson (TV’s Bored to Death and Fargo). Also, set to begin streaming beginning Friday, Sept. 29 is the highly anticipated return of NBC’s Will & Grace, which will resume with its ninth season after a 10-year long hiatus starring the familiar original foursome of Will, Grace, Jack, and Karen.

Amazon’s acclaimed series Transparent, starring Jeffrey Tambor (The Accountant and TV’s Arrested Development) as Maura Pfefferman, just recently returned for its fourth season in which viewers will see the Pfefferman family travel to Israel. Also recently returned this month to Amazon is One Mississippi, starring comedian Tig Notaro, in her role based loosely on her own life’s adventures.
