The Siege of Krishnapur Troubles by J.G. Farrell

How did I not know about J.G. Farrell until now? Both of these Booker Prize-winning novels chronicle the preoccupations and increasingly desperate circumstances of British citizens affected by their country’s crumbling fortunes and influence; The Siege takes place in a British outpost during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, and Troubles follows a World War I survivor in Ireland in 1919. The characters and plots are compelling, but the main attraction is Farrell’s writing, which strikes a breathtaking balance between comedy and tragedy.
