Subaru (reliable). Volvo (too expensive). And then, having exhausted that line of conversation, I turned our talk to food. He mentioned he recently got a flan for his birthday from the Flan Lady. He recommended I look her up, saying it was the best flan ever. I did, and discovered Johanna Torres of Branford, who works at Yale for her day job, and then turns into the Flan Lady during her time off. She makes dozens of different kinds of flan, a kind of Spanish custard cheesecake dessert. She makes the traditional caramel, and that’s a big favorite, and people love the cream cheese flan, along with the coconut version, which is her favorite as well. She also recently added a Snickers version, along with Oreo, and Reese’s. “I like to experiment, and those all are doing very well.” She makes the flans at a commercial kitchen in Hamden, and delivers in a fairly wide area, including North Haven, East Haven, Branford, Guilford, and Madison.
