Dancing Encouraged at Upcoming Free Big Band Concert

The sounds of swing and standards from the Great American Songbook will be featured when The Big Band with Bob Hughes performs a free concert on the Essex Green on Saturday, July 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. The Green is located on Main Street in Essex Village. The rain date is Sunday, July 30.

Sponsored by The First Congregational Church in Essex, UCC, the concert will feature music by The Big Band, a 12-piece dance orchestra, led by Bob Hughes. The group’s repertoire includes the big band standards from the past 50 years, including works by Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and other classic bands, as well as newer material by contemporary arrangers. Hughes has performed on saxophone and clarinet with such bands as The Rhythm Heirs, the Greenwich Retreads, Atlanta’s Sentimental Journey Orchestra, Houston’s Chuck Nolen Orchestra, and with Marty Conley’s Big Band Express.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic supper. Dancing on the grass or in the gazebo is encouraged as well. Admission is free. For information, call 860-767-8097.
