Nibbles: The Stand

I follow food and chefs, as long as they don’t move too far away. So, when I found out that Jeff Renkl, a decades-long good friend and a fine chef, was at a former gas station that was transformed into an indoor-outdoor barbecue place in Branford, it wasn’t long before I convinced friends to meet me there for a mid-week dinner. I love barbecue and this ’cue is terrific: chicken, pulled pork, brisket, sausage, ribs, and more, topped with four or five sauces (or, as I like it, separately on a cup) and sides like mac and cheese or mashed potatoes and, best of all, salads that show what a superb chef can whip up, like ones made with barley and, my favorite, chick peas, kale, sweet corn, and tomatoes. There is also a bar with local beers and, a first for me, iced nitro coffee. Prices are very reasonable; there is brunch on Sundays, a farm stand from Memorial Day through Labor Day, a Breakfast Food Truck also during the summer months, and entertainment on weekends. I am told weekends are bangin’, so unless you’re up for that, until Labor Day, try for weekdays.
