Wine and Design a Bullet Journal With Breakwater Books

Breakwater Books, 81 Whitfield Street, Guilford, will host an evening of wine and design on Thursday, July 20, from 6 to 8 p.m., focusing on bullet journals, a recent trend in personal planners.

Liza Fixx will conduct a demonstration of a bullet journal, and all journals will be 10 percent off that night.

“Come unleash your creative side, or just watch our staff have fun with markers!” she says.

The Madison Wine Shop will provide a tasting of wines, which will be available to order as well. Wine orders will be delivered to the store for pick up. No sign up is necessary.

Fixx says she has been fascinated by bullet journals for about two months.

“Bullet journals are a super cool topic that I have been following and using myself after a bout with a stomach bug kept me in bed for two days,” she says, adding that she started reading about them on Pinterest.

“We have had requests to sell them from our customers over the past couple of months as well, and have just started carrying the Leuchtturm1917 journals, the journal most frequently associated with bullet journals. They come in a rainbow of colors, and the size and quality of the paper lend themselves perfectly to bullet journaling,” she says.

Bullet journal creator Ryder Carroll says, “Note-taking and traditional journaling take time; the more complex the entry, the more effort is expended. The more effort expended, the more of a chore it becomes, the more likely you’ll under-utilize or abandon your journal. Rapid logging is the solution. Rapid Logging is the language in which the Bullet Journal is written. It consists of four components: topics, page numbers, short sentences, and bullets.” The Bullet Journal is a customizable and forgiving organization system. It can be your to-do list, sketchbook, notebook, and diary, but most likely, it will be all of the above. It will teach you to do more with less.

“A bullet journal is just a notebook that accommodates a huge variety of planning schemes. You can create calendars and to-do lists, and you can also use it as a diary, a brainstorming notepad, and more.” Carroll continues. “If you’ve ever bought a planner, but didn’t love the design of the pre-printed pages, the bullet journal is your opportunity to make a planner that fits the way your brain works.”

Fixx says she will demonstrate the basic components of how to set up and bullet journal, the index, the key, a daily spread, a habit tracker and a list. She says the possibilities for creativity are endless.

“If you like to doodle or draw, your journal can become a super artistic planner. If you are less artistically inclined, it can be more of a bare bones bullet journal that keeps you on track. We will show you examples of both, and let you play around with your own ideas as well,” she says.
