Nibbles: Duke’s Mayonnaise

I still follow Bill Daley, the restaurant reviewer who left The Hartford Courant and now is a food writer at the Chicago Tribune. A few weeks ago, he wrote about Duke’s Mayonnaise, ranking it behind Kewpie Mayonnaise, Hellmann’s, and Kraft Real Mayo. Since Duke’s is a southern delicacy and not available locally, I was curious. I bought a case of four one-quart jars on Amazon. I gave two to friends, put one in the pantry, and opened the last. It is nothing like Hellman’s. Well, it is sort of like Hellman’s, but is less eggy and has a bit of a tangy, almost spicy, taste, although it is not too spicy. I like it a lot. Maybe even more than a lot. There was a recipe on the jar for an Alabama White BBQ Sauce that is supposed to be great over smoked chicken I expect to try it in a week or so.—Lee White
