07/06/2017 12:01 AMShore Publishing’s Multimedia Specialist Tom Salatto had to pick a spot to celebrate his birthday recently and he didn’t hesitate to pick Mecha Noodle Bar, 201 Crown Street in New Haven. Mecha means “mom and pop” in Vietnamese and the restaurant specializes in Asian comfort foods, including Vietnamese pho and Japanese ramen. “We are American-Vietnamese-Japanese-Thai-Chinese-Korean-New England-Momofuku-Totto-and-Ippudo-inspired,” the owners say on the website. Tom and his daughter say it’s truly the best food they’ve eaten in New Haven this year and that it’s a “hidden gem.” Tom’s daughter is particularly fond of the shoya paitan, or chicken ramen.
