A Friend of Mr. Lincoln by Stephen Harrigan

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful novel set in 1830s Illinois, about a young Abraham Lincoln and his friendships with up-and-coming politicians, as seen through the eyes of a fictional character, friend and poet Cage Weatherby. It does what a great historical fiction book should do: gives you insight about Lincoln’s character, his social awkwardness, and his views on slavery and justice. It also explores Lincoln’s complicated and at times difficult relationship with his future wife, Mary Todd. This book provides a truly different perspective about this young lawyer who would go on to become a beloved president.
