Nibbles: Firebox

I am sorry that Firebox is all the way up in Hartford because I rarely go to Hartford. But after watching a movie called Obit at Real Artways, I had made a reservation at Firebox, just a few minutes away from the movie theater. None of us had eaten there but I heard it was good. So, here’s the deal: Firebox’s food may have been some of the best I’d ever tasted. We four shared three small plates, two entrées, and one dessert along with a good bottle of Malbec from Argentina. We ate Brussels sprouts so tiny they looked like marbles, in a soy caramel with Marcona almonds in chili oil so good we moaned. Some of the blistered shishito peppers with lemon oil, goat feta, and sea salt were a little too spicy for two friends; that meant more for me. Diver scallops with ramps, farro, haricots vert, roasted radish, and Meyer lemon crème were simply perfect and the tender duck with Brussels sprouts, goat cheese salad, hominy grits (homily grits!), and pistachios was the best presentation ever. We all shared a chocolate pudding with whipped cream sprinkled with little pieces of pretzels. I will never complain about driving to Hartford if I could eat at Firebox again.
