Reader Recommendation: R. J. Vickers

Janet Sabo of East Haddam loves using fresh herbs while cooking and this year was interested in putting together a full herb garden, so she visited R. J. Vickers Herbery, 26 Waters Street, Chester for advice. She not only got some good advice, she says, she was utterly charmed by R. J. Vickers. “It is a gorgeous shop. They have wonderful herbs, and jars of spices,” she says. In terms of the garden, among other advice, she was told how to amend the soil and to use cocoa hulls for mulch, because it further improves the soil as it breaks down, and animals “don’t like the crunching noise” it makes when they walk on it (check to be sure you get the type that’s not toxic if ingested by dogs). The herbery has been in business for more than 30 years, and the shop also features home decor, garden ornaments, plants, and antiques. They are open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. —Pem McNerney
