Nibbles: Going Bananas

Even though there seem to be lots and lots of cookbooks, there are not the same they were years ago. Publishers decided a long time ago that expensive, chef-inspired cookbooks were too expensive to make. The few readers who buy them put them on their bookshelves, where they languish, unused.

These days, single-subject cookbooks cost under $15 and many people, including me, buy them at warehouse stores. Here’s the deal: I still really like them.

I just bought Banana Recipes at BJs for $7.99 for one good reason: I always have too many too-ripe bananas. This little book is a delight. As with many I have, the recipes are simple and most of them require few ingredients we don’t already have in our pantries. Tomorrow I will make a fresh banana cake with seafoam frosting. All I had to buy was a yellow cake mix.—Lee White
