The Yale Concert Band with mezzo-soprano Janna Baty in the Symphony from Ivy Green, based on the writings of Helen Keller on Friday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Woolsey Hall, 500 College Street, New Haven. Admission is free. Thomas C. Duffy will be the music director.

The Symphony from Ivy Green sets Helen Keller’s lyrical writings to music, exploring the human capacity to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Widely recognized as one of the most important Mexican composers of his generation, Arturo Márquez wrote Danzón No. 2 to celebrate his country’s rich heritage of dance. This ever-popular work, which slowly builds to an exhilarating finale, will also be performed.

William Grant Still’s three-movement “From the Delta” paints a vivid portrait of Mississippi Delta life. Over the course of the piece, listeners will hear a chain gang singing its way through hard labor, an expressive spiritual, and a friendly gathering’s lively dance.

Special guests include the John Winthrop Middle School 8th Grade Band from Deep River. Laura Traver, director, joins the Yale Concert Band for a performance of Ed Huckeby’s “By the Rivers of Babylon,” a blend of dynamic rhythms and beautiful melody.

Additional music includes “Postcard” (F. Ticheli) and “Washington Post March” (J.P. Sousa)
