Nibbles: Muir Glen tomatoes at Job Lot

One night I was bored and decided to go to Ocean State Job Lot to find something interesting. As I said, I was bored. I took a cart and began to go up and down aisles. What I spied, in the food section, were cases of Muir Glen tomatoes, my favorite and the only tomatoes I ever buy. In fancy gourmet shops, a 28-ounce can sometimes costs nearly $4. I now get them on Amazon for closer to $2. But what I saw I’d never seen anywhere: 23-ounce containers of diced tomatoes in beautiful jars with ribbing on the side that can be used as measuring cups or for making preserves. One was plum tomatoes San Marzano-style (which is being honest, because real San Marzano tomatoes are only grown in the San Marzano area of Italy) and fire-roasted tomatoes. Both contain tomatoes, tomato juice (each organic), sea salt (just 200 mg per serving), and some preservatives. Best of all, they are just $2 per jar. I bought a lot.
