More Great Indian Food

We wrote recently about the great vegetarian Indian food at Shakahari at 1458 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. When we ate there recently, we learned that the restaurant next door, Himalaya Café, at 1456 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook, just recently opened and was operated by the same family. So we stopped by for dinner on another weekend. The standout the night we visited was the tandoor-baked Chicken Tikka, which was flavorful and moist and perfect. The Tikka Masala also was delicious, as was the Himalaya Mixed Grill. (As great as the food was, we couldn’t resist sneaking next door to Shakahari and ordering the Patra to go, the cooked colacasia leaves cooked with chickpea flour, carom seed, lemon, and jaggery.) Seated on the comfy, colorful couches and easy chairs at Himalaya with a group of great friends, along with the friendly service and terrific food, we had a practically perfect night. In addition to dinner, Himalaya serves breakfast and lunch with dishes that include avocado toast, Nutella-stuffed French toast with fresh caramelized strawberries, and grilled cheese with fresh avocado, mozzarella, tomatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, spiced olive oil, and served with a side of cilantro chutney. We’ll be back. —Pem McNerney
