Days Without End By Sebastian Barry

I can’t stop thinking about this book, and am reminded yet again how reading changes your life by opening your heart and mind. This is narrated in first person by Thomas McNulty who lost his family in the Irish Potato Famine, then comes to the United States at 17 with nothing. His story about fighting in the Indian wars and the Civil War is violent, harrowing, and heartbreaking. However, he has some happiness by making a family of sorts with his brother in arms and an orphaned Sioux girl. I wept at the transcendent beauty and humanity in this magnificent work.
