Super Food for Your Super Bowl Party

So it’ll be a big day for New England Patriot’s fans on Sunday, Feb. 5 when their team takes the field against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51. They will be celebrating their team’s seventh Super Bowl appearance in 16 years, along with quarterback Tom Brady’s seventh Super Bowl appearance, the most by any player in any position in National Football League history, and their team is going into the big game leading the league in scoring defense, always a good omen for the Pats every time the team has been in a championship game.

I only know this because I looked it up on the Super Bowl website. Like most of my friends, I’m only in it for the party food and sometimes, the half time show. This year, it’s going to be Lady Gaga at the half time show. So this year, I’m in it for the food.

Sally Rapinio of North Branford says she might try a Pizza 7-Layer Dip that’s been making the rounds on Facebook. If you haven’t seen it yet, you probably will soon, or you can Google it at “Delish pizza seven layer dip.”

Patty Urban, who lives in Guilford, plans to make the same Buffalo Chicken Chili that she made for the recent Crock Pot Cook Off contest at Page’s Hardware in Guilford. Her recipe is similar to a traditional chicken chili, with Buffalo Wing Sauce providing an extra kick.

I’m probably going to stick with some kind of dip, maybe wings, and/or nachos. I was inspired by a recent post on Epicurious that provides multiple options for each of these, along with tips on how to make your tortilla chips taste even better, 11 ways to make your wings even more addictive, and the no-recipe party trick every host (and guest) should know. You can find that here: www.epicurious.com/occasion/super-bowl.

And here’s a great tip from Shore Publishing’s Community Engagement Editor Erin Shanley.

“First and foremost, I hate football. That being said, when I was invited to a Super Bowl party a few years ago, I was overjoyed. Not because I wanted to watch the game (I couldn’t even tell you who played), but because it was the perfect opportunity to try out a recipe for bacon-wrapped weenies that a friend of mine had made at a Super Bowl party the year before,” she says. “Although they were a hit, I actually preferred my friend’s adaptation of the recipe. She had baked the weenies on a baking sheet lined with foil, which gave them a crispiness that I enjoyed more, whereas mine were cooked in butter. But when it comes to food, and football teams, it all comes down to personal preference.”
