T.C. Boyle has vividly and minutely imagined an Ecosphere in which four men and four women have been selected to live for two years as preparation for life on another planet. The Terranauts combines science, survival, and sex. The motivations, jealousies, and resentments of the three narrators are probed and dissected for the reader; and Boyle, as always, creates a story which is intriguing from start to finish. This is not just for sci-fi readers as there are great bits about commercialism and marketing for today’s society.
