Standing Rock Exhibit Inspired by Daily Meditation

The Pond, George Herrick

George Herrick will be exhibiting his artwork through Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Mercy by the Sea’s Mary C. Daly, RSM Art Gallery at 167 Neck Road, Madison, with an opening reception on Sunday, Jan. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Herrick has been drawn to creative expression since early childhood. He is a painter, life coach, writer, ceremonialist, and retreat leader, all in service to creative expression. Recognizing the creative essence in everyone, Herrick has dedicated his life to helping people draw out their innate, divinely given gifts into the world.

Since Nov. 2, 2014, George has published a meditation on Facebook each day, including a photograph of a cairn (artistic stack of stones) that he has made and a brief, original, written meditation. This exhibit, Standing Rock, is inspired by this practice, which Herrick began at Mercy by the Sea. The paintings are meditations on emotion and spirit, woven together with the common thread of the image of the cairn.

Cairns exist in many cultures around the globe, symbolizing a variety of ideas such as direction-finding, balance, grounding, and centering. The show’s title pays homage to the water-protectors in North Dakota and their stand on behalf of sacred lands, while also offering an invitation to the art’s viewers to meditate on what they stand for in their own hearts.

Herrick signs his work Lasua; this is to honor a lost part of his paternal lineage. He can be reached through his websites, georgeherrick.com and foxbatstudio.com.

Mercy by the Sea supports art as the creative expression of the human spirit. The Mary C. Daly, RSM Gallery exhibits established and emerging local and regional painters, sculptors, photographers, and mixed media artists whose artwork express a powerful connection to creation in all its forms and engages conversation, learning, spirituality and growth.

The gallery is fully accessible and located just inside the main entrance. All are welcome to explore the gallery and artwork, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; typically, the exhibits change every two to three months.
