01/11/2017 11:01 PMOver the past decade or two, there have been many iterations of Asian restaurants right off Exit 2 on Route 9 in Old Saybrook. Whether Chinese, Thai, or, often, fusion, they never lasted, sometimes because they were not very good or, at best, not memorable. Many thought the location was cursed. Not this time and not Asian, either. La Marea, a pure, fantastic Italian restaurant has been created, I am told, by the family that opened Rustica in Chester. The inside is gorgeous: what was a ranch-house restaurant now looks like the hip, trendy warehouse, the kind you see in New York City. The menu includes grilled calamari with fresh mushrooms, another fresh mushroom risotto as good as I have ever tasted, six gorgeous pizzas, homemade potato gnocchi, and a beautiful strip steak that was served perfectly, perfectly medium rare. It tasted even better. As I write this, it has been open for three weeks. They take reservations. Best to make one. Soon.
