Jobs Programs, Maple Syrup Education at Westbrook Public Library

The Westbrook Public Library will offer programs in January, including one on Job Corps’ trade programs, and another on making maple syrup and sugar.

The Job Corps, based in New Haven, will present a program explaining its services at the Westbrook Public Library on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m. Presentations about Job Corps’ current trade programs last about 30 minutes depending on the amount of people present as many may have questions. This presentation is open to young adults 16 to 24 years old.

Job Corps provides a free education to low-income young adults ages 16 to 24 centered around the career path of their choice along with the college campus experience. Its current trade offerings are: culinary arts, certified nursing assistant, carpentry, and building construction technology. Along with these programs, the students live on center (or off center arrangements for special circumstances), and receive three meals a day. They earn their driver’s license if they don’t already have one, and many advanced training options are made available to those who excel in the program. More information is available at newhaven.jobcorps.gov/home.aspx, or by calling the Job Corps at 800-733-5627.

The Potapaug Audubon Society and the Friends of the Westbrook Public Library are sponsoring a free nature education program on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. in the Westbrook Public Library. Phil Miller from Bushy Hill Nature Center will present a program on maple sugar. He will trace the history of how native Americans discovered the sweet sap of the sugar maple tree and found ways to use it. Find out more about this natural sweet treat. This program is for families and all ages. No registration is required. For more information, call the library at 860-399-6422, Tuesday through Saturday.
