Artful Living—the community theater organization that has staged summer musicals including The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, and Shrek—is expanding their 2016 season with a fall production of Ken Ludwig’s farce Lend Me a Tenor.

Set in September 1934 in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, the Cleveland Grand Opera Company is primed to welcome Tito Merelli, the greatest tenor of his generation to appear for one night only as Otello. The star arrives late, and through a hilarious series of mishaps, is mistaken for dead. Identities are mistaken and mayhem ensues in this madcap, screwball comedy.

Lend Me a Tenor was a sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End, and received three Tony Awards and four Drama Desk Awards.

Director Pat Souney says this play is the Bye, Bye Birdie of the opera world. The cast features an eight-person ensemble featuring talent from throughout the shoreline arts community. Michael Cartwright from Guilford plays Tito Merelli, Nancy Cardone of Deep River plays Tito’s wife, Maria. Max is played by Steve Sabol of West Hartford and his love interest, Maggie, is played by Vanessa Vradenburgh from Madison. Several additional towns are represented in this dynamic cast and crew including Old Saybrook, Killingworth, and Clinton.

Lend Me a Tenor will be staged October Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Oct. 27, 28, and 29 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. at Andrews Memorial Town Hall Auditorium, 54 East Main Street Clinton.

The show is for mature audiences and not recommended for children under 12 years of age, but is the perfect night out for lovers of comedy, lovers of the opera, and lovers in general.

Advanced tickets are $20 and can be ordered online at artfullivingct.com.
