Make Your Mudroom Function for Your Whole Family, Including Your Dog

Spring has sprung, and everyone is ready to spend some time outdoors – especially your dog – but with the warm weather and April showers comes mud. With a few upgrades to your mudroom it's easy to turn a simple utility room into a pet-friendly, easy-to-clean space.

The addition of a doggy wash station will make those muddy hikes more enjoyable as you'll be able to quickly and easily give your dog a bath without bringing mud and muck into your bathroom. When choosing your setup, there are several things to consider, according to Michelle Cicarella, who has been a groomer for 15 years.

"You'll need a tub with a good draining system, hot and cold water, and a handheld sprayer with different pressure settings," says Cicarella, owner of Lucky Dog Grooming in North Branford. "You also want to have it elevated because it's easier on the back."

Cicarella noted that it's important to consider the size of your dog because if you cannot lift it into the tub, you will need a ramp or stairs with slip-proofing. For smaller dogs, a large farmhouse style sink or utility sink may be an easier solution than installing a tub or shower unit.

Another worthy investment is a high velocity blow dryer. Keeping bath essentials – like shampoo, conditioning spray, brushes, nail clippers, and towels – nearby will make the process even more convenient.

The addition of your dog's crate to the mudroom will provide a place for your four-legged friend to relax after his pampering. A crate doesn't have to be an eyesore or take up valuable floor space. There are several dog crates on the market that serve as end tables that provide space for storing bathing supplies, toys, or treats on top. Dog crates can also be incorporated into the design of the room, built under a countertop or even into the wall.

In order to make the most of the space, consider installing both base and wall cabinets, along with drawers. These will add plenty of storage for your family's and your dog's possessions. By designating a space for your pet's possessions, you will always know where to find food, treats, pet waste bags, medications, toys, and more.

The mudroom cabinets are a perfect place for storing your family's items they need on the go. From sports equipment to hats and gloves to umbrellas, having a home for everything will make finding what you need when you need it a breeze. If your dog will be eating meals in the mudroom, a cabinet with pull-out bins is a nice way to store dog food so it is easily accessible, but out of the way.

Open front cabinets or locker-style cubbies are great for easy access to coats and backpacks. A low shelf is a great place to stash shoes. You can even add a cubby for your family pet as a place to keep a leash handy. Hang a towel in the cubby so you can quickly wipe down your dog after a rainy walk.

With the right upgrades, your mudroom's functionality could not only be improved for you, but for your pet as well.
