Swinging into Summer in Style

Do you remember the feeling of freedom soaring through the air on the swings of the playground as a child? Now more than ever, many people are searching for ways to bring that light feeling into their lives and taking old-fashioned swings to a whole new level.

The classic porch swing is going through a renaissance and is popping up in many more places than just the front porch. Porch swings are being updated with cup holders or notches to hold a wine glass, built-in coolers, or even fold-down tables.

You don't have to limit yourself to just one swing, either. Consider surrounding a fire pit with a pergola with a swing hanging from each section for a great gathering spot on a warm summer night. Upgrade the area by adding a space to store firewood or a small bar area for snacks and drinks.

Want an area that's more suitable for lazy-day lounging? Try a do-it-yourself  pallet swinging bed. Just a few pallets and pieces of lumber, rope,  some hardware, and a few hours can result in the perfect place for relaxing on a summer day. Once it's hanging, top it off with a cushion or  mattress and a few weather-proof pillows. If you plan to leave the mattress or cushions outside, consider adding a waterproof cover.

If you don't want a bed, there are plenty of other DIY options for adding swings to the yard. In addition to pallets, you can also upcycle old chairs, cribs, skateboards, headboards, doors, and more. Pinterest offers a plethora of ideas and instructions.

But just because it's called a porch swing doesn't mean it has to be attached to a porch... or even be outside. Imagine the whimsy an indoor porch swing could add to your living room – maybe near a fireplace or looking out a big picture window. Not only would a swing add comfortable extra seating, but adding additional cushions or a cozy plush throw could make it even more inviting.

Of course, indoor swings can easily be incorporated into playrooms, but they can also add a touch of fun to adult living areas. With several options available – both freestanding and those that are installed – you can find a swing to suit any style.

Be it a simple board swing or a fabric sling swing or even a more elegant, extravagant design, it's important to remember that if you choose to hang the swing, install it into a joist or solid beam in the ceiling. Homes with exposed beams make installation even easier.

If you're not confident in your handyman skills, there are also a number of swings that are freestanding. Not only do these save you from having to drill into your ceiling, but you can also move them from room to room when you're ready for a change of scenery.

No matter what your style or whether you're looking for added fun inside or out, a swing could be the perfect solution.
