Yellowjackets’ Swim Team Competes in Class LL State Meet

The East Haven-Wilbur Cross-Hillhouse (EH-WC-H) co-op girls’ swimming and diving team competed in the Class LL State Championship meet that took place at Cornerstone Aquatic Center in West Hartford on Nov. 15. The Yellowjackets finished in 13th place out of 19 teams by posting a team score of 130 points at the Class LL meet. Ridgefield finished in first place with a score of 761 points, and Greenwich came in second place with 629 points scored in states.

Senior Julia Rosado turned in the best performance for EH-WC-H by claiming third place in the 100 backstroke at last week’s Class S State Championship. Rosado swam a time of 1:00.06 on her way to finishing in third place for the backstroke. Rosado also competed in the 100 butterfly at states and took seventh place with a time of 1:00.47 on behalf of the Yellowjackets.

EH-WC-H also saw all three of its relays participate in states. The 400 freestyle relay of freshman Madeline Bourdeau, senior Abby Brooks, junior Kate Kim, and Rosado finished in 12th place by recording a time of 4:07.06 at the meet. The 200 medley relay of Brooks, Kim, Rosado, and freshman Diana Melnyk finished in 14th place with a time of 2:07.53; and the 200 freestyle relay featuring Bourdeau, junior Alexis Lamprea, Brooks, and Melnyk also finished in 14th by posting a mark of 2:01.64.

The Yellowjackets’ swimmers had qualified for the state finals as a result of their performances at the Class LL State Qualifying meet that was hosted at Cornerstone Aquatic Center on Nov. 12. Each swimmer who finished in the top 24 in an event advanced to the championship.

Rosado finished third in the 100 backstroke after posting a time of 1:00.89 in the event for EH-WC-H at the state qualifier. Rosado also finished in eighth place for the 100 butterfly. Rosado initially swam a time of 1:01.34 and finished in a tie for eighth with sophomore Olivia Cieciwa of Westhill-Stamford. Rosado and Cieciwa then had swim-off to determine who would compete in the top heat in the butterfly at the championship. Rosado won the swim-off with a time of 1:00.11, edging out Ciciewa’s time of 1:00.59 to secure her spot in the top heat.

Kim finished 26th in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.09) and placed 31st in the 200 individual medley (2:32.32) for the Yellowjackets at the Class LL Qualifying meet. Bourdeau came in 36th place in the 500 freestyle (6:30.74) for EH-WC-H.

The 200 freestyle relay of Bourdeau, Lamprea, Brooks, Melnyk finished in 13th place (2:00.37) for the qualifier. The Yellowjackets’ 400 freestyle relay of Bourdeau, Brooks, Kim, and Rosado took 13th place (4:16.21); and 200 medley relay of Lamprea, Kim, Rosado, and Melnyk finished in 14th place (2:08.07).
