The North Haven U-19 baseball team saw its season come to a close when the squad took a loss against East Haven in the play-in round of the Connecticut Elite Baseball Association’s (CEBA) Division II Tournament. On July 31, No. 9 seed North Haven took on 8th-seeded East Haven in a CEBA play-in game and dropped a 2-1 decision in its final game of the summer season. With the playoff loss, North Haven finished the year with an overall record of 3-16 after going 3-15 in the Division II standings during regular-season play.
Anthony Maggiore threw a great game for North Haven by pitching six innings in which he allowed just two runs (1 earned) on three hits and two walks to go with six strikeouts. East Haven was able to push home one run in the bottom of the third inning and another run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead in the game. North Haven came back with a run in the top of the fifth to make it 2-1, which ultimately held up as the final score. Jake Marquardt pitched a complete-game six-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead East Haven to the win.
In the third inning, Marquardt tripled and scored to put East Haven up 1-0. East Haven added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Noah Danz reached on an error, stole third base, and then scored on an error to make it 2-0.
North Haven rallied for a run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit in half. With two outs, Ty Rooney hit a single to get it started. Rooney went on to steal second base and later came home on a single by Jason Senberg for a 2-1 ballgame.
North Haven was able to put runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn’t bring them around to tie game as East Haven came away with the one-run victory.
Derek Novicki went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate for North Haven. Rooney was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Senberg went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Chris Hager and Devin Santiago both went 1-for-3 for Head Coach Mike Busillo’s club.
