Warriors Get First Win in the Dream League

By Chris Piccirillo/

The North Haven Warriors girls’ lacrosse team worked hard all summer long to try to get its first win in the Dream League. On Aug. 2, the Warriors saw their perseverance pay off when they put that first win in the books with a 13-10 victory over Stratford at North Haven Middle School. North Haven, which also took a 7-6 loss to Amity last week, is playing Branford in its final game of the Dream League season.

North Haven had lost a few close ones in a row prior to its game against Stratford. However, this time around, it was the Warriors that prevailed in a closely contested matchup as they defeated the Devil Dogs by the final score of 13-10.

Shea Saracino netted five goals and added two assists to lead North Haven to the victory. Mariella Biceglia scored four goals and had one assist to support the Warriors on the attack. Eliza O’Connor had two goals with one assist, while Lorelei King and Juliana Wittig both scored one goal for Head Coach Bernie Pellegrino’s team.

“I’m encouraged that we continue to progress both individually and as a team each game,” said Pellegrino. “Our younger players are making tremendous strides. This is a great sign for the future.”

Coach Pellegrino was pleased to see such a productive showing on offense from the Warriors in their win versus Stratford. The North Haven High School girls’ lacrosse team, which is also coached by Pellegrino, had been scheduled to face Stratford during the 2020 spring season.

Pellegrino added that the Warriors’ defense turned in a stout showing when they defeated the Devil Dogs. North Haven’s defense features several players who are returning to the high school ranks next year, and Pellegrino said that every member of the corps has shown great growth during the Dream League season. North Haven’s defensive unit features Mackenzie White, Zaina Gebril, Sophie Barra, Jenna Pine, Lauren Boegart, Erin Johns, Sophia Melillo, and Emma Kirkaldie.

Goalkeeper Hanna Sommer put together a 10-save effort for the Warriors in their win over Stratford. Pellegrino complimented Sommer, who is entering junior year at North Haven, for excelling against varsity-level competition in the Dream League, and said that she’s ready to step into the net for the high school team next spring.

Two days before defeating Stratford, North Haven hosted Amity for a Dream League North Division game. The Warriors dropped a 7-6 decision against the Vikings at North Haven Middle School.

Callie Kessler and Emma Gambardella scored three goals apiece for North Haven in the contest. Biceglia, O’Connor, and King each had one assist. Sommer made 10 saves in net for the Warriors.

During the previous week’s action, North Haven took a 14-7 home loss to Branford in a divisional game on July 29. Kessler and Gambardella both scored two goals for North Haven. O’Connor, Saracino, and King each scored one goal for the Warriors, who were bolstered by strong showings on defense from Gebril, White, and Barra.
