Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Valley Regional boys’ track team headed to New Britain last week to compete at the Class M State Championship at Willowbrook Park on May 29. The Warriors came in seventh place overall scoring 40 points in total.
Junior Ryan Shasha gathered some gold hardware with a top finish in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6 feet.
Senior Jason O’Brien came in second place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.42 seconds. O’Brien also earned third place in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet-3.5 inches.
The 4x100 relay team of junior Andrew Ferguson, O’Brien, junior Arick Outama, and senior Nick Braga, took third place, clocking in at 44.41.
Ferguson also helped earn Valley some points in the 100-meter dash with a fifth-place finish at a mark of 11.36 seconds. Additionally, Ferguson placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 22.80, while Braga took seventh in the 100 at a time of 11.57. Braga also took 18th place in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.99.
The 4x400 relay quartet of Senior James DiLuca, junior Macklin Miezejeski, senior Jason Montecalvo, and sophomore Egan Rothrock took 10th place with a time of 8:53.0.
In the 800, senior James DiLuca got 11th place (2:05.62). In the 400, junior Brian Rankin took 18th place (54.27). Jason Montecalvo placed 30th in the 3,200 (10:43.17).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
Valley sent several athletes to compete at the Class M State Championship on May 29. The team finished in 29th place overall with 2.5 points.
Sophomore Madelyn Costello scored Valley’s 2.5 points when she tied for sixth place in the high jump, clearing 4 feet-10 inches.
Other notable finishes included, freshman Ava Cunningham, who notched an 11th-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 12:17.65, and in the 1,600, Cunningham came in 17th place with a time of 5:51.74.
Junior thrower Jenifer Caulfield took 10th place in the javelin with a throw of 97-11. In the discus, Caulfield’s toss of 75-11 earned her 19th place.
Sam Calamari, Ava Cunningham, Grace Jacaruso, and Elizabeth Klomp took 10th place in the 4x800 with a time of 10:49.28.
The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Addison Marchese, sophomore Audrey Lenda, Hanna Babek, and Madelyn Costello earned 16th place with a time of 53.52 seconds.
Lenda also competed in the long jump and got 21st place with a leap 15-1.25, and Lenda also took 35th place in the 100 with a time of 13.90.
Emma King came in 22nd place in the triple jump with a distance of 31-0.5. Sophomore Madelyn Costello took 23rd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 51.54. Sophomore Hanna Babek earned 35th place in the 200 with a time of 28.78
The Warriors picked up their first states win in over a decade when they downed Killingly in the first round of the Class M State Tournament last week. After that, Valley lost a second round contest to close out its season with a final overall record of 12-11.
On May 29, the 17th-seeded Warriors headed to No. 16 seed Killingly, where they secured a 4-2 victory to mark their first states win since 2006. Valley was helped by a strong performance on the hill from freshman pitcher James Marsden, who went 6.2 innings and earned the win.
The next day, Valley lost a 15-1 game at Wolcott to finish out the year.
The Warriors played its first match since they won an 11-3 road contest over Suffield in the final game of the regular season on May 16. Valley opened up the Class S State Tournament with a qualifying round match against East Catholic and lost a 12-4 on May 25. The Warriors finish the season with a final overall record of 8-9.
In the states loss, senior Sean Cole picked up a goal and an assist. Freshman Duncan Rider scored a pair of goals, while Ricky Persico added a goal. Cameron Frazier and Cooper Strecker provided an assist apiece.
