Morgan Girls’ Hoops Pushes Win Streak to 10; Girls’ Track 6th at States
Girls’ Basketball
The Morgan girls’ basketball team won both of its games last week and has now won 10-straight contests, all by double figures. Morgan is 17-2 on the season and ranked 5th in the Class M State Tournament standings.
First up on Feb. 9, Morgan dispatched Haddam-Killingworth 55-30 at home. The Huskies started slow and led 7-6 at the end of the first, then extended the lead to 23-15 at the break. In the second half, Morgan turned it on by outscoring HK 32-15 en route to its ninth win in a row. Sami Ashton scored 24 points and added six assists and six steals; Josie Sullivan scored 13 to go along with 10 rebounds; and sophomore Brianna Navarra had eight points and four steals.
Next, Morgan defeated Coginchaug at home on Feb. 12 for win No. 10 in a row. Ashton scored 28, Sullivan had 16, and Riley Smith had 10. After a strong first quarter, Morgan led by 10, but the Blue Devils were able to stay in the game and trailed 28-19 at the half. The Huskies came out on fire on both sides of the ball in the third period to put the game away, outscoring Coginchaug 19-4 on their way to the 65-31 final.
Girls’ Indoor Track
The Morgan girls’ indoor track team finished in sixth place at the Class S State Championship with 28 points on Feb. 12 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Mike Underwood’s squad was led by a strong showing in the relay races. In the 4x400-meter relay, Morgan placed second with a time of 4:12.42 behind Kathryn Mozzochi, Courtney Viglione, Catlen Goss, and Courtney Carroll. The same group also landed a third-place finish in the 1,600 sprint medley at 4:23:33. Alli Gardner, Elizabeth Granfield, Kate Daley, and Carroll came in at 10:10.16 in the 4x800 for fourth place.
Mozzochi also took third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.84; in the 3,200 meter run, Daley grabbed fourth with a time of 11:39.51; Isabella Ranaudo ran the 1,000 meters in a time of 3:22.23 for 12th place; in the shot put, Shoreline Conference champion Victoria Barron finished eighth with a throw of 32-feet-11 inches; and in the high jump, Hannah Zirkelbach grabbed 17th with a height of 4 feet-6 inches.
Boys’ Indoor Track
The Morgan boys’ indoor track squad fared well in the relay events at the Class S state meet. Justin Navarra, Calvin Jackson, Burton Caldwell, and Mateo Zumpano placed 10th in the 4x400 with a time of 3:46.83; Mike Fiorillo, Brett Martin, Thomas Southwood, and Al Viglione finished ninth in the 4x800 at 9:05.85; and Navarra, Jackson, Caldwell, and Zumpano took eighth for the 1,600 sprint medley relay with a time of 3:56.50.
