Don't Know How to Mulch

 April 16, 2014

As one drives around Branford, it's unfortunate to see how many businesses hire landscapers who don't know how to mulch a tree. The large mounds around the tree trunk can kill the tree. There should be a ring around the tree of at least three feet with no mulch...

A Celebration of Literacy

 April 16, 2014

Spring is here and the Friday and Saturday book sorters are hard at work preparing for the annual Friends of Blackstone Library book sale under the big tent on the Branford Green this Sept. 18 to 21. Last year's sale netted a record $58,000. Funds raised are...

Hit the Mark

 April 9, 2014

Crazy for you, BHS Performing Arts...Yes we are! The audience for Crazy for You on March 20 could not have been more appreciative.
The performance was a joy from beginning to end. The vocals were fabulous. And, oh...

A Walk to Feed Neighbors

 April 9, 2014

Since we live in a prosperous community, it's hard to imagine that many of our neighbors struggle to afford the most basic staple, food. But the statistics bear it out. One in seven Connecticut households is struggling to put food on the table.

Supporting Local Farmers

 March 12, 2014

I spoke with a local farmer named Bob Sansone today. I was inspired by two things. One, an online article about his family farm's 300-year history, and second, a proposed bill: "Ban the Extreme and Unnecessary Confinement of Breeding Pigs (Gestation Crates)."...

Branford, for the Birds

 March 12, 2014

Birds, like all animals, need three things to survive and thrive: food, water, and shelter. Branford residents can attract birds to their backyard by planting or encouraging native trees, shrubs, and groundcovers. Research has shown that even small pockets of...

 February 26, 2014

Wow! [Regarding the Feb. 13 À la Carte column "Splurge-Worthy Oatmeal Sandwich Cookies."] Having the exact required ingredients could mean my best ever...not to mention nutritious snacks are great following shoveling.

Due to a Snowstorm...

 February 26, 2014

The Branford team of the Shoreline Greenway Trail regrets that it had to postpone our town meeting scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15 due to a snowstorm. We apologize for any inconvenience and are happy to announce that the meeting has been rescheduled for Sunday,...

Too Much Damage

 February 19, 2014

The utility companies are out of control. Countless trees in our community have been hacked by workers hired by CL&P who are not arborists. Often the tree is made weaker by the pruning job. Private trees have been cut down without the owner's permission.

Our Dismal Situation

 February 19, 2014

Regarding the Feb. 6 story "Success Populates Diversity Forum," I'm sorry that I missed this forum and hopefully there will be others I can attend. I'm kind of wondering, though, what gun control and [program co-organizer Frank Carrano's statements] "attitudes...

Everyone's Trail

 February 12, 2014

How many of your readers are aware of the progress being made to provide a safe, maintained walking and biking trail from Guilford to East Haven as part of the Shoreline Greenway Trail? Part of it is along the Trolley Trail and along the side of Young's Pond.

Stem this Destructive Tide

 January 30, 2014

I have been alarmed and appalled by the massive tree removal and the destructive and ugly tree trimming that has been conducted in the last few months under the auspices of CL&P. Much, if not all, of this work has been done thoughtlessly, without planning...

The Help Needed to Survive

 January 30, 2014

On behalf of the Human Services Board of the Branford Counseling Center (BCC), I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Branford Cares for its recent donation of $10,000 to BCC's Basic Needs account. The Basic Needs account provides targeted financial...

 January 23, 2014

The Branford/Guilford boys' swim teams recently completed another successful Ad Book campaign. As always, we greatly appreciate the generosity of our patrons. We would like to recognize the following patrons who supported our 2013-2014 annual Ad Book...

Speak Out on Wall Field

 January 23, 2014

This is a follow-up on letters I wrote in December in my attempt to save the Wall Field property from being developed. The Dec. 14, 2013 meeting had to be canceled due to the snow storm.
The Economic Development Commission has...
