Nibbles: ALDI
I feel about new supermarkets the way other women feel when a Nordstrom opens. I love the place. Here is what it doesn’t do: give you free bags and bag your groceries. The cashiers get to sit down, which I think is lovely. There aren’t many different brands you don’t recognize, either—and they didn’t have canned artichokes. But it is really inexpensive, the produce looks terrific, and you feel like you are in another country. I bought avocados for 49 cents, a brick of Velveeta-like cheese half off the price in most supermarkets. (Let’s be honest here, ALDI calls it Clancy’s, but Velveeta is Velveeta and nothing melts like Velveeta.) I bought almost two pounds of rice for less than $1.50, and I bought a bag of salted milk chocolate almonds. So sue me.
