Gambardella, Weidman State Runners-Up for Boys' Swimming
Sophomore Corey Gambardella was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.60 at the Class M Boys' Swimming State Championship, just tenths-of-a-second off the pace of event winner David May of Notre Dame-West Haven (50.22). Junior Eric Weidman was also a second-place swimmer in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.92).
Elsewhere, junior Cole Horton found fifth with the 100 free (50.26), Weidman finished sixth with the 500 free (4:54.52), plus Gambardella found sixth with respect to the 200 free (time of 1:49.26).
At the State Open on March 21 at Yale, the Indians were tied for 29th place with 44 points. Gambardella was fourth in the 100 butterfly (51.08) while Weidman was 13th for the 100 breaststroke (1:01.73) and 20th with the 500 free (4:55.96).
The State Open capped off a postseason that also saw the Indians finish 14th with 172 points for the SCC Championship on March 6 at Southern Connecticut State University, led by Gambardella's victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.86 as he edged out Kyle Shadeck of Cheshire (54.38). Additionally at the conference championship meet, Gambardella was runner-up in the 200 individual medley (2:01.08) to Notre Dame-West Haven's May (1:57.58), Weidman swam to fourth with the 500 freestyle (4:57.16) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.12), plus Horton found 11th in the 100 free (51.89).
